IEM in numbers

IEM Katowice 2020 in numbers

In this post I will go over some data from the recent IEM Katowice StarCraft II event (Feb 28 – Mar 1, 2020, Liquidpedia link). Data were gathered from the released replay pack (438 games, Ro76 onward). I used my webapp for analysis. I recently added IEM data and made some other changes.

Game length

There were 118 PvZ, 98 TvP, 59 TvZ, 103 PvP, 41 ZvZ and 19 TvT games.

Compared to older data we had faster TvZs – the median length of Terran won games was 10.8 minutes (12.4 previously), and Zerg won games 11.9 minutes (12.6 previously). We also had longer TvTs 15.4 minutes (11.3 before).

Hero units

A single uThermal's Battlecruiser has killed 3625 resources worth of Ragnarok's units (7 Corruptors, 1 Spire, 12 Drones, 3 Queens, 6 Zerglings, 1 Baneling Cocoon, 2 Overlords, and 1 Broodling).
The game was played on "Zen LE" in Ro76 (Youtube VOD).

One Rail's Tempest has killed 2725 resources worth of uThermal's units (3 Battlecruisers, 1 Viking, 1 Medivac, 1 Supply Depot, 1 Marine and 1 SCV).
The game was played on "Eternal Empire LE" in Ro76 (Twitch VOD).

Soo's Ravager has killed 2100 resources worth of Showtimes' units (4 Archons and 3 Zealots).
The game was played on "Eternal Empire LE" in Ro24 (Twitch VOD).

Wins by country

As always South Korea had a strong presence. Showtime and Serral were the only foreigners to advance from the group stage.

As for the number of wins per country, Germany takes the second place thanks to Showtime (15 game wins), Heromarine (8), Lambo (7) and TLO (6). The third place belongs to Poland with Elazer (5), Mana (4) and Gerald (4). Taiwan is in the fourth place thanks to Has (11) and Nice (9).

Unit COST-EFFECTIVNESS

I quite like this chart even if it doesn't directly tell whether a unit is good or not. Some units will inevitably have a high score due to their different design (e.g. Swarm Hosts). On the other side, melee and other front-line units will have low scores. You can likely think of many other influencing effects.

Worker Slayers

Cure has killed 129 TY's SCVs on "Ephemeron LE" and was victorious.

Dark has killed 107 Solar's Drones on "Triton LE" and was victorious.

Gerald has killed 105 Soul's SCVs on "Ephemeron LE" and was victorious.

Worker kills

The following charts show which units killed the most Zerg's Drones. All other worker-race combinations can be found in this imgur album.

Workers lost

Gerald lost 104 Probes to Soul and yet still managed to win.

Following charts show median lost workers per game. Data is shown for each matchup, median values are shown for games with any result, wins only and losses only.


Economy and army

These charts take a look at average mining rate and army value for given matchup.

TvZ was the most economy focused matchup in non-mirrors. The mining rate grew the fastest and reached the highest values. As usual, Zerg had some economic advantage between 10–20 minutes. But after that the economy evens out, and it's not uncommon for Terran to overtake Zerg. PvT was the most even matchup in terms of both mining rate and army value.

Cost-effectivness

Total value of units and structures destroyed/lost was calculated for each game. We can now compare it between matchups and for different game outcomes. The biggest difference is in the TvZ matchup where Terran is generally trading better. Also in this matchup, there is a clearly visible separation in trading efficiency for both Terran and Zerg between won and lost games.

Proxy locations

Here are winrates for games that started with proxy Barracks, Stargates or Photon Cannons. We can also see used locations on Nightshade LE. Proxy locations for other maps are in this imgur gallery.

Race distribution for Ro8, Ro4 and finals was as good as it can get (3-3-2, 2-1-1, and 1-1 respectively)

Unit usage

And as the last thing, following tables show in how many games each unit type was made, and what is the winrate for those games. In my webapp, you can increase the resource amount to see only higher investments into each unit type.

In some cases the winrate difference can be more impacted by reaching a certain game stage and less because of a focus on certain units. Also, sometimes you make certain units in a winning position, instead of winning because of those units. So this again can't tell you directly if a unit is "good" or "bad". But at the very least seeing how often are those units made is interesting.
